Producing a car that purports to be all things to all drivers is often fraught with peril. Inevitably, compromises must be made, as is the case when attempting to combine off-road ruggedness with luxury. Land Rover, however, has managed to develop a reasonable blend of the two with its Land Rover LR4.
In fact, the degree to which this midsize luxury SUV integrates both urban sophistication and serious off-road capability is nothing short of remarkable. On the style front, the Land Rover LR4 offers a ruggedly handsome exterior and an interior filled with upscale bells and whistles and high-quality materials. While this deluxe truck has its downsides -- dismal fuel economy, for instance -- this is one of only a handful of vehicles that seems every bit as much at home pulling into the valet stand at some swanky bistro as it does exploring all those blank spots on the map.
Current Land Rover LR4
The Land Rover LR4 is a midsize sport-utility vehicle that's offered in a single well-equipped trim level. Five seats are standard, but a roomy pair of third-row seats is optional. Power comes from a 5.0-liter V8 that cranks out 375 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive round out the powertrain details. Unfortunately, EPA fuel economy estimates are well below most of its competitors.
Given its price that undercuts that of many other large luxury SUVs, the LR4 refreshingly includes a wealth of standard features, rear parking sensors, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, front and rear sunroofs (the rear is fixed) and Bluetooth. Stand-alone options include a locking rear differential, a rear seat DVD entertainment system and a multiple-camera system that provides a 360-degree view around the vehicle. There are also several options packages, which add items like xenon headlights, a rearview camera, a heated steering wheel, heated seats (first and second rows), a navigation system and a premium audio system.
While the Land Rover LR4's interior doesn't quite swaddle passengers in silky grades of premium leather like the high-buck Range Rover, it's still one of the nicest cabins in its class. The seats, steering wheel, dash and console use high-quality materials that feel rich to the touch. Stadium-style rear seating provides ample room in all three rows, while large side windows and a fixed rear sunroof contribute to the cabin's expansive feel. Raising and lowering the third-row seat can be a bit of a struggle, but doing so helps free up a maximum of 90 cubic feet of cargo space, which is quite cavernous.
Despite the LR4's upscale cabin, it has a no-nonsense side when you come to where the pavement ends. At the heart of this capability is Land Rover's Terrain Response system that allows you to select the type of conditions you want to tackle (mud, rocks, snow, sand, on-road) and lets the LR4 automatically dial in the optimal suspension and powertrain settings.
Back on the pavement, the LR4 performs admirably for such a hefty vehicle, with the V8 and six-speed automatic delivering ample acceleration. Precise, nicely weighted steering makes the LR4 feel more agile than you'd expect, but it should come as no surprise that its weight and tall profile make it feel a bit lumbering compared to many other large crossovers. The suspension is very well-tuned in terms of ride quality, however.

Love it so far - 2010 Land Rover LR4
By Skippy - March 26 - 8:00 pmWhen my wife and I went shopping we looked at all the competitors. Decided to look at the Range Rover Sport but liked the LR4 more because it was so roomy. (I am 62" tall.) Test drove and loved it. After 3 months I still do. Great performance. Poor gas mileage? Sure but that is the trade off I was willing to make for the ride and power. The visibility is really great. Inside it almost feels like a greenhouse with all the glass. I am pleased with the sunroof shade. I was wondering about that since it is not a complete blackout. It has turned out to be perfect. I will use this vehicle occasionally off road but honestly doubt that I will ever take it anywhere close to its limits

A giant step for Land Rover - 2010 Land Rover LR4
By tjp74 - October 14 - 11:03 amThis is no typical midlife facelift. I could see that Land Rover engineers and designers really poured their hearts into this new design. I could tell their efforts. Ive got the top of the line, HSE Lux plus package that has standard 5 camera surrounding monitoring system. Its got black premium leather with no cost optional Grand Black Lacquer wood trim that makes the whole interior look so gorgeous. The difference between LR3 interior is like night and day. I also looked at new Lexus GX460 and to me, there is no comparison. Ride and handling is very good. My previous car was Lexus GS350 AWD sport sedan. LR4 doesnt feel like big heavy SUV. And huge room for the 2nd and 3rd row passengers.

New LR4 LUX LOVE THIS SUV! - 2010 Land Rover LR4

We just had a bad Noreaster here in Virginia Beach, I can say that the LR4 made us more comfortable driving through the heavy rains and floods. LR4 was for my kids and wifes safety...over the low mpg. The kids and wife were able to see everything and clearly. The ride is amazing...I am glad I bought this over the Q7, GL- 450/320, LX470. A very well thought out car with seating for 7 adults. If you are planning to buy Land Rover in mid-atlantic...Go to Richmond Land Rover.I am already looking into a possible 2011 Range Rover for the wife so I can get her LR4 for myself next year.

By LoveMyLR4 - May 7 - 2:13 pmI got it yesterday and cant get out of the car! Always wanted a LR3 but was stuck on a lease and then decided to wait a few month for the arrival of the LR4. Looked at the GL-450 and the Q7 and was tempted by their diesel option, but the LR4 offered the best value, the best ride and a very quiet cabin. Its very spacious inside but not big and bulky. I got the Lux Package. Its fun to drive and very comfortable.

Close to being perfect - 2010 Land Rover LR4
By Karl - April 3 - 10:00 amHave driven 6000 miles in 5 months on all terrains and cant say enough about the comfort, utility and off road capability. The air suspension allowing the vehicle to be lowered makes getting in and out easy. Pickup with the powerful 8 cyl engine is great and one feels really safe in the LR4. Wish it had better fuel performance or the choice of a diesel engine. Otherwise nothing to complain about. Great car.

LR 4 LUX - 2011 Land Rover LR4
By mkcoach - January 30 - 4:46 amThis is my third Land Rover and it is another great vehicle. The LUX edition of the LR4 has great features for any purpose, on road or off road. The 2011 LR4 is a significant improvement over my 2009 LR3 HSE. It has a tremendous ride and the increased power is a great improvement. The new Land Rover dealer in Tulsa was great to deal with and provided a very pleasant experience.
